PROSPECTING SECRET

Each person in the network marketing industry will usually grow through four distinct mind sets of recruiting in their career. Usually by the time they reach the 4th mind set they are full time in the industry and already earning a substantial income. They have a peace of mind and an assurance that they can control their destiny.

If they do not grow all the way to the 4th mind set they will usually leave the industry. They run around crying, "Network Marketing Doesn't Work...". This is because they recruited a lot of people but none of them actually worked to build a business. Most were not interested in the first place. 

Which level are you currently at?

The first mind set is what I call the Unconsciously Incompetent, the excitement level, or "ignorance on fire". The thoughts of someone operating at this level are usually something like the following: 

  • Everyone should want to do this! 
  • This is going to be easy, all I have to do is find a certain number of people. 
  • I'm going to be rich next year after I find my heavy hitters. 
  • If I could get uncle Joe into this, he would make me rich...

People operating at the Unconsciously Incompetent level are usually driven by excitement. They recruit because they are on fire and people want to watch them burn. The new recruits join because of the recruiters excitement and not because their understanding of the program and /or their personal reasons (definite of purpose). This sets them up to lose interest in the program after just a few weeks. 

Within a few months (about 90 days) new distributors start to realize that finding "a certain number of people" is not the answer. It's not finding people it's developing people. They have now reached Consciously Incompetent. Unfortunately, this is where most people quit. They realize that this takes work. They also realize that they must be "value focused" and not "dollar focused".  They realize that they must find out why  their prospect would want to build a business. They must become someone that can learn, implement, then teach duplicable systems. They realize their personality is not duplicable. They realize they are not the issue and they start having thoughts like the following: 

  • I must not have what it takes. I really have to learn this business.
  • Why did uncle Joe join and then never do anything, why isn't he interested? 
  • How can those top performing people recruit such good people and I can't? 
  • The returns I've gotten from my efforts so far have not been worth the effort. 
  • I spend all my time recruiting people who don't do anything after they join. 
  • I'll never be able to "retire" from my business if I'm always having to recruit. 
  • I should just quit... 

The distributors who make it through Consciously Incompetent will eventually arrive at Consciously Competent. At this point they have gotten plugged into a leader who teaches duplicable systems. They realize that the most effective systems are ones that find emotional reasons within their prospects. They have worked on themselves, practiced what to say and how to say it. They establish their own reasons and by doing so developed the perseverance to win. 

At this level, recruiting is more like a "rhythm". They usually start to receive their first recognition within their company and start to develop a confidence in their prospecting and recruiting ability. They learn the difference between Dollar Focused and Value Focused.

However, it isn't long (about a year) before extreme frustration sets in and begins to drive them to the next level. They start having thought like: 

  • I'm tired of wasting my time recruiting people who don't have any reasons to build a business. 
  • I wish I had known that uncle Joe wasn't going to do anything, I would not have wasted my precious time and energy working with him. 
  • Recruiting is no longer hard for me, but now it's like  a "rhythm".
  • I understand that recruiting is just the beginning, sponsoring is the answer.

They develop an awareness that drives them to Unconsciously Competent. At this level distributors have an entirely different view of prospecting and recruiting. Distributors operating at this level are now considered to be a professional network marketer. They have a unique difference in their prospecting and recruiting. Somehow, now everyone they recruit comes in and goes to work. Now, the predominant attitude and thoughts are something like:

  • I will not waste any of my time "chasing" people.
  • I enjoy qualifying people.
  • My prospect must qualify before I will spend my time working with them. 
  • Now, I require prospects to sell me on them before I will show them my opportunity. 
  • I truly enjoy helping people out of the terrible scenario's they are dealing with and providing them hope.
  • Properly Sponsoring people in this beautiful industry provides rewards beyond imagination.

This is the highest level possible for recruiting in network marketing. If you will carefully evaluate the top money earners with any company you will usually see this attitude. 

In the past I have spent hundreds of hours working with people trying to get them to this level. It used to be a long hard road that most people never traveled. 

However, now I have discovered that even brand new people can get to this level quickly and easily with the proper tools and a little training!

I have been operating at this level for several years and all I can say is that,  it is worth whatever you have to do to get to this level. Until you do, you will not have true long term retirement because the people you bring in will just keep quitting.

    I have found that to be extremely efficient at prospecting you have to have to achieve 4 basic steps with your prospect. 

    1. The first step is to use conversation and probing questions to make the prospect painfully aware of the unwanted conditions in their life. I call this "Making them emotionally aware of the pain in their life". Like asking how they really feel when they have to drop their baby off at daycare, etc... 
    2. Then, you must lift them up by offering hope. You can show them that they can get out of that unwanted condition by changing their outlook on life and pursuing their own opportunity. 
    3. Then you must present your opportunity as hope. Don't try to sell. 
    4. The last step is what all the other levels are missing. You must take the opportunity away and make them come after it. This is where you require the prospect to qualify for your program and/or time. 

    When someone joins your business through this process it is very likely they will be ready to run. You will not have to call and babysit them because they will be calling you asking you what to do next. This makes your business both exciting and rewarding because now you don't feel like you wasted your time recruiting them.
